The BBC have a radio programme called "The Unbelievable Truth". It's a panel game-show and is classed by the BBC as comedy. Team players are asked to judge unlikely, amusing and quirky statements as to whether they are true or not.

On last night's show (26 October 2009, 6:30pm) by way of a lead in to the programme, the programme's chairman gave various examples of such "statements". One example he gave of an untrue statement is that the last entry in Anne Franck's diary is about her father giving her a set of drums. The studio audience laughed - presumably at the thought of Anne Franck leading herself to the gas chamber by having hit the drums and alerting the Nazis to her hiding place. Silly girl.

I could not believe my ears - I still cannot believe it. Is the BBC staffed with of such a bunch of ignorance, vulgar and insensitive cretins? They seem to have learnt nothing from the Jonathan Ross affair.

Oh dear, global climate change might well be natural after all and not manmade, according to a recent paper: McLean, J. D., C. R. de Freitas, and R. M. Carter (2009), Influence of the Southern Oscillation on tropospheric temperature, J. Geophys. Res., 114, D14104. Oh dear! oh dear! the paper has been "peer reviewed" and is not from nutters. The last line of the paper's abstract is wery interesting, ja?

I wonder if the BBC will give as much coverage to the suggestion that the forcing mechanism for global temperature variations may be natural and not due to manmade "greenhouse gases", as it did over the supposed link between MMR and autism? I somehow doubt it since they've been silent about the criticism of the very notion of the greenhouse effect by Gerlich and Tscheuschner. Oh, and that one was "peer reviewed" as well.

Yahoo is now utterly, utterly hopeless!

When Yahoo first started, way back in the early 1990s, I was an enthusiastic user. They had some excellent facilities. I particularly liked Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Briefcase and links to Palm software - and my very first web site was on Geocities.

Since that time the company has steadily gone downhill. It cannot decide whether it's a web portal, a search engine or a social networking site. Consequently it is none of those things. Yahoo mail is now so slow as to be unusable and all the better facilities have been withdrawn, leaving us with total rubbish. The latest to go is Geocities.

Whatever Yahoo's CEO is smoking, it is not medicine!

The UK Labour party's web site has at least TWENTY-TWO different flash applications on one page – I gave up counting. Fortunately, my trusty Firefox flash-zapper ensured they were not running. Labour seem as capable of designing a web page as they are running the country. Like their one-time leader, Blair, once the flash is removed, there is zero content.

Harry "its part of my salary" Cohen is to stand down as an MP at the next Election - story here. Good! You will remember that he is the MP who claimed a house in East Stockwell Street, Colchester was his MAIN home. Nothing wrong with that, except the house in question is a single room about the size of a public lavatory - and he was very rarely there - oh, and he also let out the house. Funnier still is that according to the Guardian, "Cohen told activists: 'It has been the greatest honour of my life to represent Leyton and Wanstead, living all those years in the constituency.'" My italics.

Sir John's profile, details, bio or whatever the hell its called has had to be removed from Facebook (story here) for security. I had always thought only kids, celebs, media wonks or total morons actually had Facebook accounts. It appears not to be so. How sad.

According to the BBC, 171 British soldiers have now been killed in Afghanistan. The British Army is very small, so this number of deaths is not insignificant. The UK is spilling blood and treasure in a far away land (nothing changes!).

Why are we there? The standard answers from the British Government are to fight terrorism and help the people of Afghanistan.

Terrorism, like robbery, is a crime. Crimes are best dealt with by the Police. And I'm not sure we are helping the people of Afghanistan by supporting the corrupt "government" of Hamid Karzai, or by bombing wedding parties. "Ah, but we mustn't let Afghanistan fail." I seem to remember hearing that said about another country - South Vietnam.

Institute of Physics publishing?

So there's an absolutely amazing, vitally important physics research paper just published entitled "Quantum Encrypted Information Sent Over An Eight Node, Mesh Network" by M. Peev et al (sic).

According to this site, it's published in the New Journal of Physics, 11, 075001 (37pp), DOI: 10.1088/1367-2630/11/7/075001.

Well first, as of today, that particular DOI doesn't appear to exist and nor does page 075001 et seq. of the New Jornal of Physics, which is published by the Uk Institute of Physics (IoP). Nor does any preprint exist - at least not that I could find. There is this on the arXiv.org server. M Peev seems to be there as one of the authors, but it's one year old and anyway doesn't give the "New Journal of Physics" as the destination journal. So just where is "Quantum Encrypted Information Sent Over An Eight Node, Mesh Network"?

It seems that some physicists are so desperate to hype their research that they are becoming like politicians - bad politicians at that - and making claims that something exists before it's actually available for scrutiny. I don't think Isaac or Albert would have done this. Tut! Tut!

MBNA Europe Bank

It seems that the credit card company MBNA is cancelling cards of customers who have always paid-off the full amounts on their monthly statements. Particularly hit are cards that are infrequently used and carry high credit limits.

MBNA say it's because they are a "responsible lender". What's that got to do with the price of fish? Perhaps the real reason is more along the lines of MBNA is not making enough money off these customers. Or could it be that the credit card company is finding its resources stretched in these hard times?
